Illustration School: Let’s Draw Magical Colour by Sachiko Umoto was an impulse buy at the Whitechapel Gallery Bookshop. This cute little paean to colour is written by one of Japan’s most popular artists with an extremely distinctive illustration style.  We discover how the author artist made friends with each colour in order to discover the magical powers and the hidden emotions behind each colour.

Here’s a quick summary of colour emotion according to Umoto:

RED – Powerful, active, aggressive, passionate. The most eye-catching colour

PINK – Gentle, graceful, feminine, fantastical

ORANGE – Warm and happy, a combination of aggressive red and cheerful yellow

YELLOW – Bright, dynamic, active and expansive

LIGHT BLUE – Refreshing and relaxing, associated with sky and water, sources of life

BLUE – Cool, calmness, integrity, trust and innocence

GREEN – Comfort, freshness, safety and harmony

LIGHT GREEN – Refreshment, vitality and regeneration

PURPLE – Mystery, nobility, value and artistry

BROWN – Naturalness, gentleness, sweetness and bitterness

BLACK – Quietness, decency, dignity and anxiety.  Absence, heavy and formal
